In 1985, Drs. Bogdan and Stella Nowicki left their home city of Gdansk in Soviet Poland to come to the United States for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. That decision would launch the husband and wife doctor team onto a career path that has benefited the lives of thousands of pregnant mothers, injured veterans, automobile and workplace accident victims, patients with chronic illnesses, and individuals struggling with addiction.
Drs. Bogdan and Stella began working in addiction treatment as a result of their multi-decade careers in women’s health. The couple had dedicated their lives to helping women from disadvantaged communities access healthcare services, and the Nowickis noticed that substance abuse often played a role in both a patient’s medical conditions and the adverse civil issues they faced (like pregnant women and new mothers losing custody of their children).
The Nowickis saw a need for addiction treatment in Nashville to help people heal and to keep families together. The idea for S.T.A.R. Wellness was born. The “S.T.A.R.” in S.T.A.R. Wellness stands for “Standing Together Against Relapse,” which is the core mission of the Nowickis: to help patients overcome addiction and build their lives anew without judgment or shame.
To-date, the Nowickis have authored over 180 scientific publications featured in top peer-reviewed medical journals, and they each served as tenured professors at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. Bogdan and Stella have nearly a century of combined medical and research experience in microbiology, endocrinology, immunology, addiction treatment, behavioral health, and several counseling modalities.
In addition to running their Middle Tennessee opiate addiction treatment clinic, the Nowickis manage The Nowicki Institute for Women’s Health Research (NowlforHeR), which is dedicated to increasing understanding of women’s health and reducing gender disparities in health research.
